I was diagnosed with diabetes many years ago and I struggled with losing weight. The two issues were working against me. There were times when I was diligent with maintaining a healthy weight or dropping excess weight and my blood sugar levels would get better, but then there were times that I would fall back and my blood sugar and weight were horrible.
Through my employer Mecklenburg County, I was able to visit a Marathon Health Charlotte Network center. I started meeting with a health coach and we set small, obtainable goals so I could start on a healthy path to lose some weight. I was able to meet my goals with success.
I also met with Physician Assistant Tam Surey, who started looking at the medication I was taking for diabetes and changed them. The combination of the new medication coupled with a plan to lose weight helped with my success.
I dance twice a month and either walk or jog at least 30 minutes three to four days a week. I also cut most meat out of my diet and eat mostly chicken, fish and turkey. I also limit all my meals to before 6 p.m. and only drink water and eat small snacks of veggies afterward if I’m still hungry. I am definitely on a path to a healthier lifestyle. I have more energy and it’s needed to keep up with my 9 grandchildren. My advice: Don’t overthink, just do it! — Tina Jackson, Marathon Health Member
