Following surgery and physical therapy to repair my left shoulder rotator cuff, I discovered I needed my right shoulder repaired as well. However, when I went for pre-admission testing, they wouldn’t do my surgery because my A1c was too high. I thought my diabetes was being controlled through medications prescribed by my primary care physician.
At the time, I was receiving post-op therapy from physical therapists Jon Strychasz and Dave Schordock at Union Trades Medical Center in Brooklyn, Ohio, as part of my employer-sponsored Marathon Health benefits. Jon Strychasz suggested I consult with Physician Assistant Jo Simkus.
Immediately Jo began to help me understand the importance of managing my diabetes. Jon and Dave helped me develop a gym program. The entire team at Union Trades Medical Center was so supportive. They taught me the importance of healthy eating and how to exercise correctly.
I lost 40 pounds and lowered my A1c. I have never felt better. I work out at the gym three to four days a week and walk every day. I even participated in the health center’s exercise challenge — and won!
It really saved my life. Before, I accepted the fact I was going to die in my 70s like my parents, but now I feel like I have a path to enjoy a long life. I know I can see my grandchildren grow up.
I never would have been able to do this on my own. With the support of the health center and my family, I feel like I have my life back! — Ann Babinyecz
