When I visited the Bay Educators Wellness Center, I was overweight and had high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. I had also begun to suffer from depression and anxiety because of the COVID-19 crisis. I was completely exhausted after work each day. I was teaching from home and my health issues were worsening to the point that they began impacting my family relationships too.
Marqueta Seeuws, FNP, prescribed me medication to help control my blood pressure and blood sugar levels. When my depression and anxiety became an issue, I received medication for that as well. But I didn’t stop there. Since May, I have cut carbs and sugar from my diet, added weight lifting to my daily workout, and walk 3 to 4 miles every day.
As a result, I have lost 40 pounds, brought my blood pressure under control, and reduced my A1c from 7.8 to 5.1. The exercise has also helped in my battle with depression and anxiety, and I am better able to handle the everyday stresses of being a teacher. I have more energy for my family and my relationship with my wife has improved.
It may seem hard or impossible at first because of where you are, but you can do it. Don’t look at the mountain in front of you. Instead, look at the next step and take it. I have never once regretted my decision to start my journey toward a healthier lifestyle.
