In January 2019, I was diagnosed with stage III melanoma. I had never felt so overwhelmed and scared in my life. I started immunotherapy treatment in February and it severely compromised my immune system, ultimately inducing type 1 diabetes. I had struggled with weight all my life, but this downward spiral upped the stakes. I did a lot of self-reflection and decided it was time to make a lifestyle change.
First, I started walking, and then added kickboxing into my exercise regime. After I had the exercise habit instilled in me, I started focusing on my nutrition. Now, I track my exercise and food intake daily.
Additionally, I began seeing Angela Curran, FNP, at Wellnet to establish a support and accountability system. Angela has provided words of encouragement throughout my journey. Likewise, she has always been available to answer questions I have as I work to establish and achieve my goals.
With proper nutrition, exercise, and goal development, I have lost 60 pounds. I am more comfortable with who I am and am unafraid to do activities I would have previously avoided due to my weight. I am now a Beachbody Coach and an accountability group leader, working to help others with their own fitness journeys.
My experience has changed the way I look at life. It made me realize how precious life is – I will never take it for granted again. I was so consumed with myself last year, so this year I’ve been making up for lost time with family and friends. I love being more active and more mentally available for others.
