I wanted to reduce my A1C with hopes of becoming healthier and maybe even place my diabetes into remission. I was not able to control my weight. I was starting to experience vision clarity challenges, my blood sugar levels were getting to dangerous levels and I was always exhausted.
I was working remotely and scheduled a health coaching visit through my employer’s partnership with Marathon Health Anywhere. I met with Health Coach and Registered Nurse Tamara Golden. She was a friendly voice who instantly made me feel comfortable. She didn’t make me feel bad or upset. Instead, she was able to understand my situation, thoughts and feelings.
Tamara offered me suggestions to start small and invest in a few changes at a time. She was there as my motivator, coach and always able to offer suggestions if I hit a roadblock. With her support, I’ve been able to build new habits.
I slowly introduced healthier food choices and eliminated a great deal of processed food. I started setting small goals by walking 15 minutes a few days a week, and now I’m walking at least 45 minutes each day! My A1c dropped from 9.8 to 5.6 and I have lost approximately 50 pounds. I am completely off my daily insulin medication.
I’m able to climb stairs without getting winded. I am looking at new exercises that I can enjoy. I am even exploring new healthier recipes to try each week. I have new habits around tracking my food to see how it impacts my health. I plan my meals and personal events in order to participate and not let life stop me.
I tell people don’t be afraid to start. Forget about past attempts that may not have gone as planned. Focus on eating healthier and add a little movement to your life. The rest will take care of itself. Know you will hit roadblocks, but that’s ok. You’ll learn to try something new that works for you. — Linda Heebner, Marathon Health Member
