Today, we thank and honor all who have served in the armed forces. We are extremely grateful for your service to our country and the values that uphold it. Because of your courage, resilience and patriotism, we are able to enjoy the liberties of living in a free nation.
This Veteran's Day, we're shining a light on two teammates and their service to our country and the veteran community.
Why did you enlist in the Army? Duty, education, and training. I come from a long line of service members and the men that I looked up to (dad, uncles, coaches) all served in the US Army. They always told me about their experiences and what it meant to serve, which compelled me to enlist.
What was your “job” in the Army? Human Resources Specialist
How long were you in the service? 15 years
What would you want others to understand about being a soldier and/or veteran? For me, being a soldier meant carrying the torch and building upon the foundation laid by the veterans that went before me. We all serve to protect the freedom and liberties of this great country and we make a lot of sacrifices along the way. There’s nothing more special than seeing a group of people believe in something bigger than themselves and come together as a team to accomplish their mission. True professionals, leaders.
What is your favorite memory while in the service? The camaraderie and fellowship with people from all walks of life.
What veteran organization do you work with? I volunteer with a veterans’ organization called VetsRoll.org. Vets Roll aims to provide CLOSURE*GRATITUDE*RESPECT to America's senior-most Veterans for the incredible sacrifices they have made in the name of freedom! The trips that I participate in bring WWII and Korea era veterans to the Virginia and Washington D.C. area to visit the veteran memorials.
What is your role with the organization? I volunteer as a nurse practitioner for the Vets Roll trips with veterans. All of the Vets Roll trips have medical volunteers as well as companion volunteers.
How did you get involved with Vets Roll? In 2015 my father, who is a Korean Era Army Veteran, went on a Vet Roll trip but our family was not aware of what this organization, and trip, were fully about. Once I was aware of what the trip meant to my father I wanted to be involved. In 2016, my father-in-law, also a Korean Era Army Veteran, participated in a Vets Roll trip.
Who can volunteer to help on these trips? Anyone! There are medical volunteers of all levels. Medical Assistants, Registered Nurses, Paramedics. Any type of medical personnel is welcome to volunteer as well as non-medical volunteers to serve as companions. Individuals come from all over the country to participate in the trip.
Thank you again to all our veterans, and everyone who supports this community. If you know a veteran, please take time out of your day to share your appreciation! There are few people who deserve it more.
