New CEO to build on strong momentum – accelerating growth, innovating the care model and provider enablement, and expanding access to affordable, high‑quality care for employees
INDIANAPOLIS— Marathon Health, a leading provider of advanced primary care for employers, labor organizations, and health plans across the U.S., today announced the appointment of Chris Pricco as chief executive officer. Pricco succeeds co-founder and longtime CEO Jeff Wells, MD. Wells will support Pricco and the company through the transition, and will serve on the board.
Pricco brings 30 years of executive leadership experience in specialty care management, provider networks, value-based care, and employer-sponsored care and coverage. He joins Marathon Health from Paradigm, where he led the company’s specialty networks and payment integrity platform, growing the business by 300 percent over five years.
Prior to joining Paradigm, Pricco held a series of progressively senior leadership roles at Optum for more than 15 years, most recently serving as chief operating officer of the medical benefit management division. In that role, he led programs managing high-complexity, high-cost cases, including transplantation, oncology, kidney disease, and musculoskeletal conditions. Prior to Optum, Pricco served as founding CFO and later CEO of Renaissance Health Care, a renal disease management company partnering with health plans and state Medicaid agencies.
Pricco steps into the role at a time of increasing demand for advanced primary care (APC). As more employers turn to APC to improve access, strengthen prevention, and manage total cost of care, Marathon has built a differentiated and trusted model that continues to resonate in the market. As CEO, Pricco will build on this foundation–expanding Marathon’s reach and deepening its impact for more employers, members, and care teams across the country.
“Chris understands the complexity of health care and the opportunity ahead for Marathon,” said Wells. “He knows what employers need from their benefits investments and is deeply committed to transformative care built on trusted provider relationships. He’s the right leader to guide Marathon’s next chapter of growth.”
To meet growing demand and bring best-in-class care to communities facing challenges in access, supply, quality, and affordability, Marathon is expanding its open-access network to Detroit, Kansas City, Raleigh-Durham, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Last year, adoption of Marathon Health’s APC model reached an all-time high, with the company opening 83 new health centers, growing to 3,300 Marathon employees, and renewing partnerships with more than 95% of employer clients.
“Primary care accounts for roughly 5% of America’s health care investment, while we spend three to four times that on strictly administrative tasks,” said Pricco. “Yet primary care sits upstream of – and directly influences – 90% of total care costs. That’s why more employers are redirecting spend toward primary care. As a platform for coordinated, connected care, Marathon’s model not only brings prevention and early intervention to the member, it is also a means to capture cost control and enhance outcomes across the benefits and delivery system.”
